Applications have closed for the House Call Doctor 2019 Futures in Health Indigenous Scholarship.
House Call Doctor is Queensland’s leading home doctor service providing after-hours gp support to patients from Cairns to northern New South Wales border.
Hundreds of indigenous medical students from around Australia have applied for this year’s annual House Call Doctor scholarship.
Last year’s scholarship was awarded to single mother of three, Tanaio Anau, who was studying to become a midwife so she could help women in her local community.
Ms.Tanaio is from Boigu Island, just six kilometers from the mainland of Papua New Guinea and her closest medical facilities are 145 kilometers away on Thursday Island.
She said: “Studying on one of the most remote islands in Australia is very challenging”.
“I have to leave my place of employment for 10 weeks each year to meet the commitments of clinical placements and residential intensive courses.”
Ms.Tanaio said: “My long-term goal is to bring my midwifery skills and knowledge and invest back into my community. I want to be a good role model and an inspiration to a lot of young women back home to help them better themselves through education.”
Indigenous health professionals account for 0.3 percent of the national healthcare workforce.
House Call Doctor’s CEO Wayne Ormond said the scholarship program was created to further opportunities for indigenous students and to support quality healthcare in Australia.
“At House Call Doctor we recognize the contribution that medical professionals make in ensuring that Australians are happy and healthy, but we also know that there are too few indigenous health professionals in the workforce and we want to help change that,” Mr. Jennings said.
The scholarship was open to students who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in the least their second year of a medical/health degree at an Australian University.
