Founder & Chief Design Officer – Karen Chang
The iF Design Award is known for its “independent, rigorous and reliable” standards in award selection during the past 66 years. As one of the most important awards of the world for designers, the iF Design Award receives attention and enthusiasm of global top designers. It is an annual feast for designers where enormously fabulous work will be displayed and compared, also an occasion to make friends via design. This year, it received 6,375 works from 52 countries of the world for competition.
Following cooperation with global famous designer Jaya Ibrahim on the work of The PuLi Hotel in Shanghai, Karen Chang produced the Savoir Resort. The hotel design work won her an iF Design Award.
The hotel is located within national 5A tourist attraction Xixi Wetland Park, transformed through traditional residential houses in the South Area of Yangtze River. This is a place where the indigenous live in seclusion for generations, away from busy lifestyle. Through an elegant and rustic way of fishing and tea farming, they enjoy a “seclusive” lifestyle with satisfaction from simplicity.
Karen Chang is the chief interior designer for the hotel renovation of Savoir Resort, working on a design concept that preserves the original appearances of traditional houses, draws from the “seclusive philosophy” followed by the indigenous, and creates a space more suited to modern generations. Provide a dreaming style of vocation for people living in bustling cities.
The hotel features 20 separate villas, and each one naturally harbored by an independent watery space. Through the glass windows and doors, the dwellers feel like wrapping in the nature, with ripples, sunshine, clouds, rain, trees and lakes presenting a panoramic view.
It is not easy to plant traditional architecture into modern lifestyle. Designers choose to use breathable terrazzo because the mild material is able to resist cracks and contractions even in a moisture environment with a high level of humidity. The floor paved with terrazzo is connected with bronze wires; and the bathtub made of terrazzo fits perfectly with the entire space of the architecture, endowing the space with a vintage connotation, making it elegant and gentle.
