Poll Shows Rising Number of Canadians Complaining of Poor Sleep Quality

Sleep is vitally important for our well-being and for the proper functioning of our bodies. It provides us with the energy that we need to get through our busy days and aids our immune system to help keep us from getting illness and disease. When we sleep our bodies also create new cells and repairs and regenerates our body. A good night’s rest can also enhance our mood, improve our memory and increase our overall brain function.

Unfortunately, it is estimated that over 70 million people across North America alone, suffer from sleep disorders or poor sleep quality. With increasing stress, both at home and in the workplace, and an increase in blue light exposure from electronic devices (which affects our circadian rhythm) it’s no wonder why so many people are going to bed tired and waking up tired as well.

There are a number of different techniques that can be attempted in order to try a get a better night’s rest:

  • Set a nightly routine and stick to it
  • Go to bed at the same time every night and aim for eight hours of sleep
  • Use stress relieving techniques before bed such as breathing exercises, meditation or yoga
  • Dim the lights an hour before bed and avoid blue lights from electronic devices, such as tablets and cell phones, for at least an hour before bedtime
  • Control your bedroom temperature by ensuring it is slightly on the cooler side. A bedroom that is too warm will be very difficult to sleep in.

Another reason why so many people experience difficulty falling asleep or issues with sleep quality is due to their mattress condition. A mattress that is old and worn out can cause back and neck pain and will not be able to provide the support that is required for the body to promote good sleep.
