San Marin High School is proud to be home to an outstanding international champion. Last year, Izagani Aquino won a bronze medal in the Music History category at Germany’s International History Olympiad during a trip to Berlin last summer.
“The experience is something that I will truly never forget,” Aquino said. He represented Team California in the competition, with more than 250 student opponents from all over the world. Aquino prepared for this competition with dedication to one thing: studying. He studied alone, with friends, and with fellow California teammates. “In addition to this, I would study with my dad every day as well because he is also a history buff and provides great pointers. My dad is the real MVP.”
Because of his thorough preparation for the competition, arriving in Berlin was no sweat for Aquino, who competed in multiple events including a sports history bee, a research competition, a written exam, and a general history bee. Much of his support back home came from an unlikely source, the San Marin varsity football team, who Aquino is the manager of. “All the players and coaches did a great job of hyping me up to compete, and also being understanding and letting me take time off to go to Germany.”
In Germany, Aquino won the Music History competition. He said, “I fought my way into a sudden death round, beating a Canadian on a toss-up written about the song ‘Fight the Power” by Public Enemy. I was very happy to medal, and was even happier to be carrying the state flag on the podium…One of the best parts of the Olympiad was, not only being able to represent the State of California on the international level, but also representing the community of Novato, specifically my school community at San Marin,” Aquino said. “I am a very proud Mustang,” and the San Marin Mustangs are very proud of Izagani!
