Karen Smolen Champions Creativity as a Path to Mental Clarity in Veterinary Medicine

Karen Smolen, San Marcos, CA, USA.
Veterinarian Encourages Fellow Professionals to Reclaim Focus and Wellbeing Through Art, Reflection, and Purposeful Rest

Karen Smolen, a longtime veterinarian and recent interviewee in “Rhythm, Reflection, and Resilience,” is shining a light on the mental health toll faced by those in emotionally demanding careers—and how small, creative habits can make a big difference.

With over 20 years in veterinary practice, Smolen knows firsthand the emotional weight that comes with caring for animals and supporting their families. Now, she’s speaking out about how artistic expression and intentional downtime help her stay grounded, present, and resilient.

“As veterinarians, we’re often in high-stakes situations,” Smolen explains. “If we don’t find ways to release that stress, we lose clarity. For me, drawing and music aren’t just hobbies. They’re how I process the day and refill my emotional cup.”

Her message comes as burnout in healthcare and veterinary fields reaches record highs. A recent study from the AVMA reported that more than half of veterinarians experience moderate to severe burnout symptoms, often tied to compassion fatigue and overwork.

Smolen’s approach doesn’t require dramatic life changes. It begins with simple, intentional moments.

“Start with something small,” she suggests. “Ten minutes of sketching. A walk without your phone. Just sitting with your thoughts. These little pauses create space for calm, which is something we often forget to give ourselves.”

Beyond the exam room, Smolen is also a pop artist and drummer, and she credits these outlets with helping her maintain perspective and purpose. Her art explores the playful, colorful side of life, often featuring animals and themes of empathy—both central to her identity as a vet.

“Being creative keeps me emotionally open,” she says. “That makes me a better vet. I listen more closely, respond with more compassion, and connect more meaningfully—with both pets and people.”

Make Time for What Grounds You

Smolen encourages other professionals, especially those in caregiving roles, to nurture habits that allow the mind to breathe:

  • Dedicate weekly time to a hobby that brings you joy

  • Reflect on what energizes you outside of your work identity

  • Let progress be measured by how you feel, not just how much you produce

As she puts it, “You don’t need a big solution. Just space to hear yourself think. That’s where clarity begins.”

Superintendent Andrew Jordan Urges Educators to Redefine Success

Superintendent Andrew Jordan Urges Educators to Redefine Success

Andrew Jordan, Iroquois County, IL, USA.
Award-winning school leader calls for a deeper focus on purpose, connection, and community impact in education

Superintendent Andrew Jordan, a longtime educator and Illinois Principals Association Principal of the Year (2022), is calling on teachers, administrators, and education leaders to rethink how they define and measure success in today’s schools. Drawing on his own journey from principal to superintendent—and lessons learned from sports, community events, and school leadership—Jordan says real success isn’t loud. It’s built quietly through trust, purpose, and small, consistent wins.

“Success isn’t always a headline,” Jordan says. “It’s a student who finally raises their hand. It’s a parent who shows up for the first time. That’s where the real wins are.”

Why This Conversation Matters Now

Educator burnout is rising at alarming rates. According to a 2024 report from the National Education Association, 55% of U.S. educators have considered leaving the profession, citing stress, lack of support, and a growing disconnect between policy and purpose. Meanwhile, schools continue to face pressure to hit academic benchmarks and improve test scores—often at the cost of teacher and student well-being.

Jordan believes this disconnect is rooted in how we define success.

“We’ve made success about performance metrics. But if we don’t protect purpose, we lose people,” he says. “That’s how burnout starts—not just from overwork, but from forgetting why you started.”

Success That’s Built, Not Bought

Jordan’s view of success is shaped by more than test scores. His background includes running athletic events like the Stockton 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament for 15 years and co-founding community-focused races like the Wine Run 5K. Those experiences showed him how much success depends on people, planning, and presence—not just outcomes.

“Some years the tournament went perfectly. Some years it rained, volunteers dropped out, and the scoreboard broke,” Jordan recalls. “But people still showed up, because they trusted the ‘why’ behind it. That’s what we need more of in schools.”

A Personal Call to Action

Jordan is encouraging educators and school leaders to shift their focus from external validation to internal purpose. His suggestions include:

  • Start a “Why I Teach” file – Collect notes, emails, and moments that remind you of your impact. Revisit it often.

  • Talk about real wins – Celebrate the moments that don’t show up on spreadsheets.

  • Lead with listening – Ask your staff what they need—not just what’s due.

  • Protect time for reflection – Even 15 minutes a week can help realign goals and reduce burnout.

  • Share with your peers – Join committees, attend conferences, and hear what’s working in other schools.

“If we want educators to stay, we have to let them lead with heart,” Jordan says. “And we have to create space for that heart to show up.”

Changing the Scoreboard

The future of education, Jordan says, depends on what we choose to count.

  • Are we only tracking grades and attendance?

  • Or are we also counting connection, confidence, and growth?

He’s not anti-data. But he is pro-context.

“The scoreboard’s important,” he says. “But so is the locker room. What happens behind the scenes—the relationships, the effort, the reflection—that’s where real success lives.”

About Andrew Jordan

Andrew Jordan is a superintendent, former principal, and educational leader based in Stockton, Illinois. He is a two-time master’s graduate, recipient of the Stronger Connections Grant (ISBE, 2024), and member of state-level educational committees including the Illinois Masonic Student Assistance Program (IMSAP) and Representative Jason Bunting’s Educational Committee. He has presented at multiple statewide academic conferences and remains actively engaged in both education and community service initiatives.

CALL TO ACTION

Educators: Redefine your success story. This week, take 10 minutes to reflect. Write down one moment that reminded you why you started. Share it with a colleague. Lead with that—then repeat.

Schelton Assoumou Urges Action on Affordable Housing and Second Chances

Real Estate Developer and Former Executive Advocates for Smarter Housing and Support for Justice-Involved Individuals

Real estate developer and social impact advocate Schelton Assoumou, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Brownstone NYC, is calling on community leaders, policymakers, and everyday citizens to rethink how cities approach affordable housing and reentry support for formerly incarcerated individuals.

“Real estate is about space, but impact is about people,” Assoumou says. “If we only build for profit, we ignore those who need stability the most—families, veterans, working moms, people coming out of prison.”

Assoumou’s firm, Brownstone NYC, has provided housing to over 1,000 residents, 60% of whom were previously homeless or in shelters. He has repositioned over 120 distressed properties worth more than $200 million, focusing on cost-efficient Air-rights and joint venture models as a way to lower housing shortage in areas like New York City.

Investing in People Through Mentorship

For Assoumou, opportunity began with mentorship. Through INROADS, a program that supports high-potential minority youth, he went from a public university student to securing an internship on Wall Street—and later gaining admission to Harvard. “Without INROADS, my story could’ve been very different,” he says. Now, as a mentor himself, he has guided dozens of students from underserved communities into Ivy League schools and meaningful careers. He believes affordable housing and second chances must go hand-in-hand with mentorship. “It’s not just about providing a home—it’s about unlocking human potential,” he adds. Assoumou sees programs like INROADS as essential models for reentry, education, and economic mobility that cities must scale to truly support justice-involved individuals.

Rethinking Ownership Through Joint Ventures

Assoumou believes cities must move beyond traditional development models that displace families. Rather than pushing homeowners to sell, Brownstone NYC leverages joint venture partnerships to unlock untapped equity for property upgrades—enabling families to retain majority ownership while sharing in increased value. “We’re not just flipping houses; we’re flipping outcomes,” he says. This same approach can be adapted to support formerly incarcerated individuals. Community land trusts and co-ownership housing models can create long-term affordability while giving returning citizens a real stake in their neighborhoods. Additionally, incentive-based zoning reforms and public-private joint ventures can prioritize transitional and permanent supportive housing that integrates reentry services with economic opportunity. We urge community leaders, policymakers, and everyday citizens to champion such innovative strategies that treat returning citizens not as liabilities but as partners in progress. Housing equity must be a pathway to restoration—and joint ventures can lead the way.

What You Can Do

Assoumou believes that solving these issues of making housing affordable to support formerly incarcerated individuals, doesn’t just fall on developers or politicians—it’s something everyone can contribute to. Here’s how:

  • Be Informed: Learn how housing laws, zoning policies, and systemic barriers affect access to homes and jobs for people leaving prison.

  • Support Local Nonprofits: Volunteer or donate to organizations helping with reentry and community housing.

  • Mentor and Hire Differently: If you’re an employer, consider hiring someone with a record. “Redemption isn’t a policy—it’s a decision,” Assoumou says.

  • Speak Up Locally: Attend housing board meetings. Advocate for developments that serve diverse communities and reject the “not in my backyard” mindset.

Final Word

“I measure success in stories,” says Assoumou. “Not just square feet.”

Whether it’s helping a veteran out of a shelter or giving a second chance to someone rebuilding their life, Schelton Assoumou believes that the future of cities must be built on purpose, not just concrete.

AUSTIN, TEXAS, USA – The U.S market for alternative legal services continues to grow, according to industry data – supported by increasing demand for accessible and affordable solutions.

The U.S online legal services sector expanded from $5.56 billion in 2013 to $14.1 billion in 2023, according to IBISWorld, reflecting strong consumer adoption. Growth is being driven by three primary factors:

  • Digital Accessibility: By 2023, 93% of U.S. adults were online, giving most Americans access to web-based legal services.

  • Consumer Preferences: Demand for affordable, convenient solutions continues to grow, particularly in areas such as document preparation.

Global Hair Restoration Market Sees Robust Growth – Dr. Koray Erdoğan Shares Insights on Industry Trends

The global hair restoration market continues its rapid expansion, reaching a size of $10.5 billion in 2024. Industry experts predict the market will exceed $20 billion by 2029, driven by technological advancements, growing demand for minimally invasive procedures, and evolving attitudes toward self-image.

United States – 19 Aug, 2025 – The hair restoration market is witnessing significant growth, with projections indicating it will surpass $20 billion by 2029. According to a report from Allied Market Research, the market’s expansion is fueled by cutting-edge innovations in surgical techniques and a shift in societal perceptions of beauty and self-image. The global interest in hair restoration, particularly for procedures offering natural-looking and minimally invasive solutions, has seen substantial growth.

ASMED

Dr. Koray Erdoğan, founder of ASMED Surgical Center, one of the leading authorities in the field, shared his thoughts on the growing industry: “Hair restoration today is no longer just about cosmetic treatment; it intersects with emotional well-being and personal identity,” said Dr. Erdoğan. “The industry is expanding as more people, regardless of age or gender, turn to hair restoration to reclaim their confidence and self-image.”

Rising Demand and Technological Innovations

One of the most significant technological advances in the sector is the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique. FUE has gained widespread recognition in the medical community for its precision, minimal scarring, and improved recovery times. WebMD reports that FUE procedures boast success rates exceeding 95%, contributing to increasing sector confidence and growth.

“Technological innovations like FUE have revolutionized the hair restoration industry,” said Dr. Erdoğan. “These improvements in the procedure have enhanced results, reduced risks, and allowed for quicker recovery, which is why we are seeing such a broadening of the customer base.”

Medical Tourism and Global Expansion

The hair restoration sector is increasingly becoming a global industry. According to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), over 60% of all hair restoration procedures are performed in countries other than where patients reside. This trend illustrates the rise of medical tourism, with countries such as Turkey, Southeast Asia, and Latin America becoming popular destinations for high-quality, affordable treatments.

“This shift towards international medical travel not only promotes tourism but also generates significant economic impact in countries with well-established infrastructure and expertise in hair restoration,” Dr. Erdoğan noted.

Diversified Consumer Base and New Expectations

A major change in the industry has been the increasing diversity of its consumer base. Historically, hair restoration procedures were seen as a treatment for men, but today, an increasing number of women, as well as younger individuals, are opting for these treatments.

“We are witnessing a growing, informed, and diverse audience, with patients from all demographics seeking out hair restoration,” said Dr. Erdoğan. “This trend is pushing providers to adapt by offering high-quality, personalized care and maintaining high standards of professionalism.”

About Dr. Koray Erdoğan

Dr. Koray Erdoğan, a graduate of Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in Turkey, has been a trailblazer in the hair restoration industry. Since founding ASMED Surgical Center in 2001, he has introduced the internationally recognized Sequential FUE technique and co-founded the World FUE Institute in 2016. Dr. Erdoğan’s contributions through training, workshops, and presentations have solidified his reputation as a leading expert in the field of hair restoration.
