Cracks, Peeling Paint and Damp: The Alarming Exterior Issues North East Homeowners Are Ignoring

“”It’s easy to ignore what’s happening on the outside of your home — until it’s too late. This photo shows just how stark the difference can be between a protected home and one left exposed to the elements.” — Spokesperson, WeDoRender”
North East homeowners are being urged to inspect their properties as small cracks, flaking paint, and damp may signal deeper structural damage. Experts at WeDoRender warn that older homes, especially in high-rainfall areas like North Yorkshire, are vulnerable to moisture ingress and energy inefficiency. Left untreated, minor issues can lead to costly repairs. Regular exterior checks and breathable render systems can help prevent long-term damage and heat loss.

North East England & North Yorkshire – Homeowners across the North East and North Yorkshire are being urged to look more closely at their external walls, as growing evidence reveals that seemingly minor cracks, flaking paint and damp stains could be signs of much deeper damage. While the problem is often dismissed as cosmetic, specialists are warning that hidden exterior damage may be placing thousands of homes at long-term risk.

New insights from property experts WeDoRender, who operate across the region, indicate that the external weatherproofing of many homes is failing silently. And in areas regularly exposed to coastal air, rainfall, and winter frost, such as Scarborough, Whitby, Darlington, and Northumberland, these issues are often accelerated by local conditions.

Small Cracks, Bigger Problems

“Many homeowners only think about their exterior when it’s time for a repaint,” says a spokesperson from WeDoRender. “But underneath that flaking paint could be a breakdown of the very layer that keeps your home dry, warm, and structurally sound.”

Recent UK housing data supports this concern. According to the English Housing Survey: 2022 to 2023 Headline Report, more than 56% of homes in the North East were built before 1980, well before modern, breathable render systems were widely adopted. Without protective render or wall insulation, older homes are more likely to develop surface cracks, damp patches and thermal inefficiencies over time.

To the untrained eye, signs such as peeling paint or spider cracks may seem harmless. But the Building Research Establishment (BRE) highlights that even small cracks in render can allow rainwater to penetrate the outer walls of a building. Once water gets in, it can cause frost damage, reduce the thermal performance of walls, and in time lead to internal damp and mould growth.

WeDoRender reports that in many North East cases, by the time visible damage appears indoors, such as bubbling plaster or musty smells, the root cause is already well developed on the outside.

Local Weather Adding Pressure

The North East and North Yorkshire experience a unique combination of challenges when it comes to property maintenance: high rainfall, salty sea air, strong coastal winds and regular freeze-thaw cycles in winter. These factors make the region especially vulnerable to exterior degradation.

According to Met Office climate data, towns along the North Yorkshire coast receive over 900mm of annual rainfall, with inland areas of County Durham and Northumberland not far behind. The repeated wet-dry cycle puts pressure on exterior walls, and when combined with older construction materials, the result can be chronic water ingress.

In some rural and coastal villages, homes built with solid brick or stone walls, often without cavities, are especially at risk. Once moisture enters through a crack or joint, it can remain trapped, causing internal damage over months or even years.

Real-Life Costs of Inaction

WeDoRender shared one recent case from a semi-detached property in Stockton-on-Tees where a homeowner had ignored small cracks on the south-facing wall for two winters. When internal mould appeared behind the kitchen cabinets, a professional survey found damp penetrating through the brickwork due to a degraded painted finish. The cost of resolving the issue, including damp treatment, plaster replacement and thermal render, reached over £4,800.

“Most of that cost could have been avoided with early intervention,” said the company’s spokesperson. “Many people underestimate what exterior render does, it’s not just for looks, it’s a line of defence.”

Common Warning Signs

WeDoRender encourages homeowners in the North East and North Yorkshire to carry out regular visual inspections of their property exteriors. Key signs that suggest deeper issues include:

  • Hairline cracks, especially around windows, corners or door frames

  • Peeling or blistered paint, typically on sun-facing or wind-exposed walls

  • Green or black staining, often caused by trapped moisture

  • Internal damp patches, particularly on exterior-facing walls

  • Higher heating bills, which can indicate moisture absorption affecting insulation

Importantly, the company recommends avoiding quick fixes like overpainting or sealing cracks with non-breathable products, which can trap moisture in the wall and worsen long-term issues.

A Regional Challenge

From Middlesbrough to Morpeth, and from York to the Yorkshire Dales, WeDoRender’s assessment teams have documented a sharp increase in exterior damage requests over the last 18 months. Many are from homeowners who initially assumed they needed minor paint touch-ups, only to discover underlying issues linked to weather exposure and old render failure.

This reflects a broader national trend. The Energy Saving Trust states that solid walls can lose twice as much heat as cavity walls, contributing significantly to poor energy efficiency in older properties. In the North East, where energy bills are already among the highest in the UK due to colder temperatures, the connection between exterior maintenance and energy performance is becoming harder to ignore.

“Rendering is rarely at the top of someone’s home maintenance list,” said the WeDoRender spokesperson. “But in this region, it should be.”

Proactive, Not Reactive

The company advocates for a proactive approach, educating homeowners before structural or financial problems develop. Rather than pushing promotional services, WeDoRender focuses on community awareness, offering guidance to homeowners, property managers and landlords on how to recognise, prevent and resolve exterior wall damage.

They also emphasise the importance of using breathable, weather-resistant render systems designed to work with the natural moisture movements of older buildings, especially those without cavity walls or vapour barriers.

Looking Ahead

While rendering may not be glamorous, WeDoRender believes it deserves more attention in the conversation about future-proofing homes in the North East. From protecting walls against rain and frost to reducing energy costs and preventing damp, modern render systems offer a long-term investment in both appearance and performance.

For homeowners in Scarborough, Newcastle, Whitby, Sunderland or York, the message is simple: don’t wait for visible damage indoors to take action. A quick glance outside could reveal the earliest signs of problems that, if left untreated, may require costly repairs down the line.

West End Favourite, Six The Musical To Be Performed In Japanese This Autumn In London

Following the announcement earlier this week that the Japanese cast of the musical SIX the Musical will perform in the West End in November at the Vaudeville Theatre, it is only appropriate to extol the musical phenomenon that has now proved to have a truly global reach. Not many musicals can claim a meteoric rise to West End and international success quite like Six. Ever since it first burst onto the stage back in 2017, the popularity of SIX has grown, gaining legions of fans.

The West End’s sassiest musical is now firmly rooted in its “forever home,” the Vaudeville Theatre in London, and tells the story of Henry VIII’s six wives like you’ve never seen – or heard – before. The musical begins with the six women arguing with one another as they each try to make out they had the worst deal from their infamous spouse. But as the girls listen to each other’s stories of woe, they open up their hearts to each other as they come to realise it’s better to stick together.

Six had its premiere in 2017 at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The reaction to the musical picked up the interest of West End producers, who brought the production to London, where it opened at the Arts Theatre. The impact was immediate, and from this, momentum began to build that shot the production into the musical theatre stratosphere. Since opening in the West End, Six has also impressed the critics and awarding bodies, winning a hatful of both Olivier and Tony Awards, making London theatre tickets for this show a hot property!

All the characters in Six the Musical are based on Henry VIII’s six wives. These were real people, and historical figures that may know from the popular primary school rhyme, “Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived.” By the end, you will undoubtedly know all the feisty queens for themselves, but to give you an overview of these feminist trailblazers we will introduce them one by one, starting with Henry VIII’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Spanish-born Catherine was married to Henry VIII from 1509 to 1523, and their divorce famously led to the reformation of the church and the creation of the Church of England. Catherine’s colourful character in the show takes inspiration from contemporary female role models such as Beyoncé.

Henry’s second wife was Anne Boleyn. Henry divorced Catherine when he fell in love with Anne, and the pair were wed from 1533 to 1536 until, following outrageous accusations of incest and adultery, she was beheaded by the deranged monarch. Anne Boleyn’s character in the musical finds her inspiration from Avril Lavigne.

In the show, Henry’s third wife is inspired by pop royalty as Jane Seymour summons up her inner ‘Adele.’ The couple were only married for a year and Jane provided Henry with a son, Edward, but tragically died in childbirth.

Anna of Cleves was up next, and shockingly, Henry VIII’s fourth wife only lasted seven months, from January to July 1540 before Henry divorced her. Nicki Minaj and Rihanna provide the creative inspiration for the Anna of Cleves Six character.

Katherine Howard became Henry VIII’s fifth wife just days after, and the pair were wed for 18 months until February 1542 when she was beheaded due to her constant adultery. Brittany Spears and Ariana Grande both inspired the Katherine Howard Six character.

The sassy sextet is completed by Catherine Parr: Henry VIII’s sixth and final wife who survived him. The couple wed on 12 July 1543 and remained together until Henry’s death on 28 January, 1547. The Catherine Parr Six character is inspired by Alecia Keys.

Six the Musical has now become a worldwide sensation. It has been performed in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and Japan, with no sign of its popularity waning anytime soon. The production is one hour and 40 minutes of pure theatrical joy, and tickets to Six the Musical are set to remain smoking-hot property for a long time to come. Have YOU seen it yet?

SunBelt Home Sales Releases Summer 2025 Market Predictions for Central Florida’s Manufactured Home Market

As Central Florida gears up for the peak summer real estate season, SunBelt Home Sales—a leading company specializing in manufactured home buying and selling—is sharing its expert forecast for the Summer 2025 market.

With affordability continuing to drive demand and a steady influx of new Florida residents, manufactured homes are expected to play a central role in one of the most active summer markets in years.

“We’re seeing a combination of rising interest in manufactured homes and limited housing inventory across the region,” said Dave Diaz, Marketing & Sales Director for SunBelt Home Sales. “Buyers are looking for cost-effective, move-in ready options, and sellers are in a strong position to benefit from this heightened demand.”

SunBelt’s Key Summer 2025 Market Predictions:

  1. High Buyer Demand Continues With traditional home prices and mortgage rates remaining elevated, manufactured homes offer an affordable alternative for families, retirees, and first-time buyers. SunBelt anticipates increased interest from out-of-state buyers relocating to Florida for lifestyle and cost-of-living reasons.

  2. Inventory Pressure Will Drive Competition The supply of quality manufactured homes in desirable communities remains tight. Buyers can expect quicker sales cycles and increased competition for well-priced listings, especially in all-age and 55+ communities.

  3. Sellers Will Benefit from Seasonal Momentum Homes listed in early summer are expected to sell faster and closer to asking price. Sellers who prepare their homes now—through minor updates, staging, and strategic pricing—will be well-positioned to attract qualified buyers.

  4. Digital-First Buyers Will Dominate Virtual tours, online consultations, and remote closing tools will continue to play a major role in the summer market. Buyers are researching and making decisions faster than ever, increasing the importance of high-quality digital listings.

  5. Central Florida Communities in the Spotlight Locations like Ocala, Lakeland, and The Villages are drawing interest for their lifestyle appeal, affordability, and access to amenities. These markets are expected to be especially competitive this summer.

Advice from the Experts

“For buyers, the key is preparation—getting pre-approved, understanding what you want, and being ready to act fast when the right home comes along,” said Diaz. “For sellers, this is a golden opportunity. Demand is high, and our team knows how to position your home to get it sold quickly and profitably.”

Market Segmentation: Product Type, Distribution Channel, and End-User

Market Overview

Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago, is witnessing steady growth in its golf industry, with the sport gaining popularity beyond its traditional elite base to include young Indonesians, women, and the expanding middle class. Key trends driving the golf equipment market include the rise of online retail through platforms like Tokopedia and Shopee, which has broadened access to gear across the country, and the increasing use of virtual golf simulators in urban areas, enabling year-round training without requiring full courses. Lightweight, ergonomic, and eco-friendly equipment is also gaining traction, particularly among younger and female golfers. However, challenges remain, such as the high costs of playing and limited infrastructure and awareness in rural regions. Despite these hurdles, the market is poised for continued growth, supported by changing lifestyles, technological adoption, and government-backed golf tourism initiatives.

Role of Offline Distribution in Indonesia Golf Equipment Market

Despite the rise of digital sales, offline distribution remains a vital segment of Indonesia’s golf equipment market. This includes pro shops at golf courses, specialty sports stores, department stores, retail chains, and distributor networks. Pro shops, located within golf courses and resorts, benefit from direct access to active golfers and often offer a curated range of gear such as clubs, balls, tees, and accessories. These outlets achieve high conversion rates due to the ability for customers to try products before purchasing. A major strength of offline retail is the hands-on experience it provides—many stores feature indoor hitting bays, putting greens, and simulators, enabling real-time testing of clubs, grips, shoes, and balls. Offline channels continue to attract high-value customers through personalized service and strong brand engagement. Prominent brick-and-mortar retailers in Indonesia include Decathlon, Golf House, Raja Golf, Asia Golf, and Topindo Lucky Sport.

Competitive Landscape of Indonesia Golf Equipment Market

The Indonesia golf equipment market is moderately concentrated and competitive, featuring a blend of global brands, regional players, and local distributors. International giants such as Acushnet, Callaway, PING, Sumitomo Rubber Industries, and TaylorMade dominate the premium and mid-tier segments, competing through innovation, performance-focused products, and strong brand loyalty. While these global brands lead in the high-end market, regional and local vendors cater to more budget-conscious or entry-level golfers. To address the diverse needs of professional and recreational players alike, companies are expanding their product offerings. A balanced presence across both online and offline channels enables brands to effectively reach consumers in major cities as well as emerging golf markets across the country.

Scotland Takes Bold Step to Curb Drug Deaths: Glasgow’s Legal Drug Room Signals Hope for Cleanup Crews and Communities

“This is the moment we dread—the callout to another life lost to addiction. Behind every cleanup is a story that didn’t have to end this way,” said a Clean Team Scotland responder. “If Glasgow’s safe consumption room can prevent even one more scene like this, it’s already worth it.”
Scotland has opened the UK’s first legal drug consumption room, The Thistle, in Glasgow, aiming to address its ongoing drug death crisis—1,172 deaths in 2023. Companies like Clean Team Scotland and Cleanup Team, often handling traumatic overdose scenes, support the initiative for its potential to reduce deaths and staff stress. Inspired by success in countries like Canada and Portugal, the facility signals a shift toward harm reduction in UK drug policy.

Scotland has taken a pioneering step in public health with the opening of the UK’s first legal drug consumption room, The Thistle, in Glasgow. This initiative, launched in January 2025, aims to tackle the country’s persistent drug-related death crisis. According to data released by the National Records of Scotland, 1,172 people died due to drug misuse in 2023, an increase of 121 deaths from 2022 (source). An increase of 121 deaths from 2022. While still among the highest in Europe, this number is the second lowest in six years, offering a glimmer of hope amid a long-standing public health emergency.

The move has drawn cautious optimism from companies like Clean Team Scotland and Cleanup Team, which operate in Scotland and the North of England. These biohazard and trauma cleaning firms are frequently called to scenes to clean unattended deaths, many of which stem from overdose-related incidents. The psychological toll on staff who manage these scenes is significant, and both companies believe that harm-reduction strategies like supervised consumption rooms could make a measurable difference.

“The reality of this crisis isn’t confined to statistics. Our team members walk into homes where someone has died alone, often undiscovered for days or even weeks. It’s harrowing,” said a spokesperson for Clean Team Scotland. “Anything that reduces the number of these tragedies is worth supporting.”

The Thistle, located in Glasgow, offers individuals a safe space to consume previously obtained drugs under medical supervision. Beyond providing sterile equipment and immediate emergency care in the case of overdoses, the facility also acts as a bridge to recovery services and healthcare providers. This approach reflects a growing international trend towards harm reduction rather than punitive enforcement.

Countries that have pioneered similar facilities have seen significant improvements in public health outcomes. In Vancouver, Canada, the Insite supervised injection facility has been operating since 2003. Studies show that Insite users are 30% more likely to engage in addiction treatment and that the site has significantly reduced overdose deaths in the surrounding area.. Studies show that Insite users are 30% more likely to engage in addiction treatment and that the site has significantly reduced overdose deaths in the surrounding area.

Portugal, often cited as a global leader in drug policy reform, decriminalised personal drug use in 2001 and implemented a public health approach. Since then, the country has seen a dramatic decline in overdose deaths, drug-related HIV infections, and overall drug use among young people.

Similarly, in Switzerland, supervised drug consumption rooms in cities like Zurich have not only helped lower overdose mortality rates but also improved public order by reducing visible drug use and associated littering in public spaces.

Scotland’s new facility could mark a turning point. Although early data from 2024 is still being analysed, preliminary figures indicate that suspected drug deaths between January and September dropped by 7% compared to the same period in 2023, totalling 833 deaths. While not definitive, this trend aligns with international findings that supervised consumption spaces can help mitigate the worst consequences of drug misuse.

Cleanup Team, which services regions across Northern England and Scotland, echoed the sentiment shared by Clean Team Scotland. “Our work has brought us face-to-face with the human cost of addiction,” a representative said. “We’re not medical professionals, but we see the end result of a failed system. If safe consumption spaces can save lives and reduce the trauma for families and our frontline staff, then it’s a step forward.”

The psychological impact on trauma cleaning professionals is an often overlooked aspect of the drug crisis. Staff are regularly exposed to distressing scenes, which can lead to emotional burnout, anxiety, and symptoms of PTSD. For companies like Clean Team Scotland and Cleanup Team, any policy that reduces the frequency and severity of these incidents has benefits that extend beyond those directly struggling with addiction.

The introduction of The Thistle also reflects a shift in public policy that focuses on health and human dignity. The Scottish Government has faced mounting pressure to address the nation’s drug death crisis, which, at 27.7 deaths per 100,000 people in 2023, remains the highest rate in Europe. In comparison, Ireland, the next highest, records nearly three times fewer deaths per capita.

While the long-term success of Glasgow’s drug consumption room remains to be seen, the move signals a willingness to adopt evidence-based strategies. Both Clean Team Scotland and Cleanup Team express hope that this new approach will contribute to fewer solitary deaths, fewer calls for post-mortem cleanups, and a broader cultural shift in how drug addiction is perceived and managed.

As the eyes of the UK and indeed, much of Europe remain fixed on Glasgow, the potential for replication in other cities is being quietly discussed. If the results mirror those seen in countries like Canada, Portugal, and Switzerland, the UK could see a reduction not only in overdose fatalities but also in the burden borne by emergency services and aftercare professionals.

For the trauma cleaning teams across Scotland and Northern England, that change can’t come soon enough.

Groundbreaking New Book Explores the Deep Roots and Modern Realities of a Word That Shaped History

Tracing the Origins, Impact, and Legacy of a Word That Still Divides and Defines.

April 30, 2025 – Author and cultural commentator Tony DeVaun McNeil has released a bold and thought-provoking new book that dares to trace the complex, painful, and often misunderstood lineage of one of the most controversial words in the English language. Titled From Niger to the N Word, the book is now available on Amazon and is already sparking powerful conversations among readers, educators, historians, and community leaders.

In this compelling and historically grounded work, McNeil takes readers on a journey that stretches from the geographical and cultural origins of the word “Niger” to its distorted evolution into a racial slur that has left a deep imprint on society. With sharp insight and a fearless voice, From Niger to the N Word challenges readers to confront the uncomfortable truths of racism, language, and identity while also illuminating paths toward deeper understanding and healing.

“This isn’t just a book about a word, it’s about power, pain, and the way history is both remembered and rewritten,” says McNeil. “I wrote this to educate, to provoke, and to bridge the gaps between generations, cultures, and communities.”

Blending historical research with personal narrative and cultural analysis, McNeil explores how the word’s meaning has shifted over centuries, from colonial geography to slave ships, civil rights marches to hip-hop lyrics. He addresses not only its origins and misuse, but also its appropriation, reclamation, and the deeply emotional reactions it continues to provoke today.

Early readers have described the book as unapologetic, enlightening, and long overdue. McNeil’s unique voice and fearless approach allow him to break down complex historical narratives in a way that is both accessible and challenging. His work asks readers to look inward, to examine their own relationship with language, and to reckon with the legacy of racialized vocabulary in public and private life.

From Niger to the N Word is not simply an academic study or a cultural critique, it is a call to accountability, education, and empathy. It is a book for those who want to understand more deeply, speak more responsibly, and engage more meaningfully in conversations about race and history.

The book is available now in paperback through Amazon. For interviews, speaking engagements, or media inquiries, please contact Sage Grey at sgrey@inkstartmedia.com.

Hanley Investment Group Facilitates Sale of Former Grocery-Anchored Value-Add Shopping Center in Fullerton, Calif., for $12.58 Million

FULLERTON, Calif. – Hanley Investment Group Real Estate Advisors, a nationally recognized real estate brokerage and advisory firm specializing in retail property sales, announced today the sale of North Euclid Shopping Center, a 41,219-square-foot former Stater Bros.-anchored shopping center in Fullerton, California. The property, located at 229-333 North Euclid Street, sold for $12.58 million.

Hanley Investment Group’s Executive Vice Presidents Kevin Fryman and Eric Wohl, along with President Ed Hanley, represented the seller, Kraemer Land Company of Anaheim, California, and the buyer, a private investor based in Fullerton. Kraemer Land Company had professionally managed the property for 21 years, maintaining a high standard of care that resulted in a stabilized shopping center under the family’s ownership.

“Kraemer Land Company has consistently entrusted Hanley Investment Group with the sale of several anchored properties, and Hanley has delivered outstanding results each time,” said Kraemer Land Company President Brett Albrecht. “In the sale of North Euclid Shopping Center, Hanley secured a highly qualified off-market buyer who owns multiple anchored retail properties and had a strong personal interest in acquiring this center because they are based in the area. Despite several challenges, most notably a dark Stater Bros., the transaction was marked by a collaborative, partnership-driven approach among the seller, buyer, and Hanley. This teamwork ultimately led to a successful and mutually beneficial outcome for all parties involved.”

“We sourced an off-market, local private buyer through our strategic cross-marketing efforts tied to a comparable dark-anchored shopping center in Orange County that Hanley Investment Group was marketing,” said Fryman. “We secured a strong all-cash offer from the buyer and a shortened due diligence period, giving the seller certainty of closing.”

The shopping center is located at the signalized intersection of Euclid Street and Chapman Avenue, which sees over 55,500 cars per day. The property includes a 21,480-square-foot former Stater Bros. space, while the remaining shop space is 100% occupied by internet-resistant tenants such as a barber shop, hair salon, several quick-service restaurants, family dentistry, chiropractic office, and H&R Block.

“This acquisition represented a rare opportunity to acquire a value-add shopping center in North Orange County,” Fryman said. “With several years remaining on the Stater Bros. lease, the buyer has ample time to execute their business plan, including repositioning the property and retenanting the former Stater Bros. space.”

Fullerton, located in northern Orange County, is a vibrant city known for its historic downtown, strong education presence, and diverse economic base. The city is home to California State University, Fullerton, which enrolled a record 43,662 students in fall 2024, and serves as a major economic and cultural hub for the region.

With a population of approximately 143,000, Fullerton is part of a dense, urbanized area with 630,000 residents within a five-mile radius of the property and an average household income of $116,000 within a one-mile radius. The city’s economy is supported by sectors such as education, healthcare, manufacturing, retail trade, and professional services. Major employers include St. Jude Medical Center, California State University, Fullerton, and the Fullerton School District.

Fryman commented on the strength of the Orange County retail investment market, stating, “Orange County continues to be one of the most resilient and desirable retail investment markets in the country, driven by its high barriers to entry, affluent demographics, and dense population centers. Investor demand remains strong for well-located retail assets, especially those with value-add potential. This sale reflects continued confidence in the region’s long-term fundamentals and the strategic value of neighborhood centers in high-traffic locations.”
