On March 10 at the UN Headquarters, the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) commenced, addressing three key issues: Empowering Women Economically in the Digital Era, Innovative Approaches to Combat Gender-Based Violence, and Protecting Women’s Rights in Global Health Policy.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in his opening remarks, underscored gender equality as a key driver of global progress. He called on nations to accelerate efforts toward gender parity, emphasizing that women’s empowerment is fundamental to fostering global prosperity and peace.

Marking the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action—a landmark commitment to advancing women’s rights —Guterres reviewed the progress over the past three decades. However, he also highlighted persistent challenges, including gender-based violence, economic inequality, discrimination, and emerging threats in the digital era. The Secretary-General detailed the UN’s initiatives to advance women’s access to education, employment, and protection from violence, while announcing a new global call to action for gender equality—a movement to fulfill the vision set forth in the Beijing Declaration.
