Catherine Delcin grew up in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, alongside her three siblings and her mother. Her father frequently traveled between Haiti and the United States, exporting goods such as TVs, VCRs, radios, and other in-demand electronics. At the same time, her mother devoted herself to raising the family. Life was vibrant and filled with laughter, challenges, and a profound sense of hope and expectation for the future.
As a young girl, Delcin was quiet yet self-assured, an introvert who discovered the vast world of possibilities through books. By age 14, she had experienced wars, heartbreaks, the rise and fall of empires, and love—all through the penmanship of various authors. Reading became her passion and escape, with every free moment dedicated to it. Frequent power outages in Haiti meant reading by candlelight was a necessity, though her mother often cautioned her to stop for fear it would harm her eyesight. Undeterred, Delcin would wait until her mother was out of sight to continue reading, immersing herself in the solace of her literary adventures.
Growing up in an impoverished country, Delcin became acutely aware of the disparities around her. In some circles, her family was considered less fortunate; in others, they recognized their relative privilege. Despite the challenges, her family remained tight-knit, confronting lack with resolve and fear with love, meeting life’s hardships with unwavering determination. In 1991, Haiti experienced a coup d’état that marked a pivotal moment in its history. President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, the country’s first popularly elected leader, was overthrown in a devastating turn of events. The coup was a dark chapter for the nation, impacting lives regardless of political affiliation. Countless lives were lost; many went into hiding, and others fled the country in search of safety.
Though Catherine Delcin’s family was not overtly political, fear was inescapable. No one felt secure, and the pervasive sound of gunfire turned their home into a place of refuge. The family slept under their beds, staying indoors and praying for the violence to subside. Life as they knew it came to a standstill.
After weeks of uncertainty, Catherine’s father made the difficult decision to send her mother and the children to live with her grandparents outside of Port-au-Prince in the rural town of Jacmel. This decision marked the beginning of a major transition for the family. Recognizing that their future in Haiti was no longer viable, her parents began the process of filing the necessary paperwork to bring all four of their children to the United States, setting in motion a journey that would forever change their lives.
Five years after the initial application, Catherine Delcin and her family were finally approved to immigrate to the United States. Achieving this milestone was no small feat, and Delcin remains deeply grateful for her father’s leadership in guiding the family through the process. On July 14, 1996, she vividly remembers boarding an American Airlines flight bound for the land of opportunity. Dressed in a white linen skirt suit—a signature style in Haitian culture, where dressing up is highly valued—her hair neatly pulled back in a ponytail, she felt a profound sense of confidence that her life was about to change for the better.
The family traveled with a chaperone from their church, who acted as their voice since none of them spoke English at the time. Delcin recalls the stewardess asking what they would like to eat and feeling a unique joy when she selected the yellow rice option. As she held the tray of food, her happiness transcended the meal itself. The act of being given a choice and seeing her selection materialize left an indelible impression. For Delcin, that simple moment epitomized the promise of the United States—a land where opportunities are abundant and personal agency is celebrated.
Immigrating to the United States from a foreign country comes with its challenges, and for Catherine Delcin, the language barrier was among the most significant. She credits her ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) teacher, Ms. Diaz, for laying the foundation of her communication skills. Delcin recalls Ms. Diaz’s nurturing teaching style, her encouraging gaze when students read aloud, and her reassuring smile. Decades later, Delcin remains convinced that those early lessons were instrumental in shaping her long-term success.
