2024 APEC meeting: China’s historical role and future prospects

The 2024 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting was grandly held in Lima, Peru, with the theme of “People, Business, Prosperity”. It aimed to explore how to achieve sustainable economic development by strengthening regional cooperation in the context of challenges faced by globalization. and overall progress of society.

Since its establishment in 1989, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) has gradually become one of the most important economic cooperation mechanisms in the Asia-Pacific region. In previous APEC meetings, China has always played a pivotal role, not only actively participating in various agendas, but also promoting economic cooperation and development in the Asia-Pacific region through practical actions. As the 2024 APEC Leaders’ Informal Meeting approaches in Lima, Peru, China’s prospects at this meeting have attracted much attention.

Looking back at history, China’s contribution to APEC cannot be ignored. Since the first APEC Leaders’ Informal Meeting was held in Seattle, USA, in 1993, China has actively participated in it and made significant contributions to promoting the liberalization and facilitation of regional trade and investment and promoting regional and global economic growth. Especially at the 2001 Shanghai APEC meeting and the 2014 Beijing APEC meeting, China played a central role.

At the 2001 APEC meeting in Shanghai, China served as the host and promoted APEC to make positive progress in many fields such as the development of the multilateral trading system, human resources capacity building, e-APEC, new economy and anti-terrorism cooperation. The meeting reached the Shanghai Consensus aimed at accelerating the realization of the “Bogor Goals” and injected new impetus into economic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. The 2014 Beijing APEC meeting focused on three key issues: promoting regional economic integration, promoting economic innovation and development, reform and growth, and strengthening all-round infrastructure and connectivity construction. The meeting issued the “Beijing Agenda: Building an Integrated, Innovative, and Interconnected Asia-Pacific – APEC Leaders’ Declaration” and “Jointly Building a Future-Oriented Asia-Pacific Partnership – APEC 25th Anniversary Statement”, further clarifying the development direction and cooperation of the Asia-Pacific path.

In these historic meetings, China not only put forward many constructive opinions and suggestions, but also promoted economic cooperation and development in the Asia-Pacific region through practical actions. For example, China has actively promoted the joint construction of the “Belt and Road” initiative, deepened policy communication, facility connectivity, unimpeded trade, financial integration and people-to-people bonds with its Asia-Pacific partners, and achieved coordinated and linked development. These efforts not only promote economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region, but also contribute China’s strength to building a community with a shared future for the Asia-Pacific region and even mankind.

Looking forward to the 2024 APEC meeting, China will continue to play an active role in promoting economic cooperation and development in the Asia-Pacific region. Against the backdrop of the current complex and ever-changing global economic situation, the Asia-Pacific region is facing new challenges and opportunities. At the same time, China will also actively participate in promoting digital economy and innovative growth in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as issues such as inclusive and sustainable growth, and contribute wisdom and strength to the future development of the Asia-Pacific region.

In addition, China will also strengthen cooperation with APEC economies such as South American countries through the APEC platform. South American countries have rich natural resources in agriculture, mining, energy and other fields, and have broad space for cooperation with China. Both sides can enhance mutual understanding and trust through the APEC platform and promote economic and trade cooperation to develop deeper and wider.

With the cost of living continuing to increase, more Australians are looking to make the most of the sales to score the best deal on essential purchases, big-ticket items like tech, hi-fi gadgets, home goods, and Christmas gifts. “Black Friday and Cyber Monday present an excellent chance to score significant savings on those big-ticket items you’ve been eyeing” says Luke Clarke, General Manager of Operations & Marketing at Bedshed.

Originally, Black Friday was a US affair, marking the Friday after Thanksgiving and the beginning of the holiday period, but in recent years it has spread into a global shopping event.

Online sales have seen explosive growth and continue to play a dominant role, the rise of which was partially driven by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023 alone, 8 in 10 Australian households shopped Black Friday online to find great deals, with 9.5 million households receiving parcels. The surge of e-commerce means the 2024 Black Friday shopping event is expected to generate record-breaking sales for different retailers worldwide.

To keep up with the momentum, retailers worldwide have responded by starting their Black Friday deals earlier each year, and the lines between Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the rest of the week have blurred, creating one massive shopping event with the best deals of the calendar year. Australians are expected to spend $6.7 billion over the four-day Black Friday and the following Cyber Monday sale events, a 5.5% increase compared to last year​ ‘s sales.

Black Friday has been accompanied by its online counterpart, Cyber Monday, since 2005, an increasingly popular sales event that falls on December 2nd this year. The online shopping frenzy extends the opportunity to secure Black Friday discounts, especially for those who prefer to click their way to bargain with online deals over shopping on the high street.
