LOA Modernizes Roofing at Huston-Tillotson University While Maintaining Historical Standards

When LOA Roofing & Construction was contracted to manage three major roof replacement projects on Huston-Tillotson University’s East Austin campus, leadership knew it would be a rewarding undertaking. Due to the complexity of the work, project approval took two and a half years. The projects are a testament to the company’s expertise and creative capabilities.

Shortly before LOA began work, the Huston-Tillotson University campus received a huge acknowledgment when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The entire campus was designated a historic district, protecting this vital education center’s rich history. LOA understood that being the university’s roofing contractor meant they were being given the responsibility of preserving history.

The project included roof replacement for the Davage-Durden Student Union building, Anthony and Louise Viaer Alumni Hall, and a historic chapel at College Row Park. Huston-Tillotson University is known for its early 20th-century architecture, which was a significant consideration for LOA’s owner, Patrick Rich, who coordinated project planning for approval. The Anthony and Louise Viaer Alumni Hall, originally known as The Administration Building, was built circa 1914, and the chapel was built sometime in the late 1800s to early 1900s.

Roof replacement on the College Row Park chapel went well beyond replacing the surface roofing materials. In addition to re-framing the roof, LOA also reframed the walls from the inside. This technique was used to preserve the exterior walls for historical purposes. Replacing the roof involved first removing 3-4 layers of organic shingles and wood shake. New decking and subfloor were installed before the structure was reroofed with Owens Corning duration shingles. The goal was to improve structural integrity with as little visible change to the chapel as possible.

The next building to be reroofed was the Davage-Durden Student Union. Though less old than the chapel, the Davage-Durden Student Union roof covers much more square footage. Again, the aging built-up roofing material needed to be removed before new roofing could be installed. The decision was made to use a TPO layover that is partly fully adhered to and partly mechanically fastened.

Reroofing and construction at Anthony and Louise Viaer Alumni Hall was the most significant undertaking, combining historic architecture and sizable square footage. The building originally had a lead roof that needed to be removed before being replaced by a standing seam metal roof that was acceptable per historical standards. LOA contractors’ extensive custom metal work included soldering and flashing around all the chimneys. A section of the roof covered by built-up roofing with gravel and coated several times was removed and replaced with a TPO layover. LOA was also contracted to replace the fascia, repaint the fascia and soffit, install a gutter system, and reconstruct three entrances into the building.

This contract will reshape how methane emissions from hydropower reservoirs are managed, creating significant economic value through the production of sustainable bio feed and carbon credits.

At the core of this project is AIDEN’s two-stage nanocomposite membrane system, designed to efficiently separate methane (CH4) from carbon dioxide (CO2) at the molecular level. This advanced system utilizes nano sieving technology for high selectivity, with methane separation capabilities exceeding 50 and CO2 permeances up to 2000 GPU. The system’s energy efficiency, consuming only 0.3 kWh per kilogram of methane captured, positions it as a highly effective solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Once captured, the methane is processed using an engineered strain of Methylomicrobium buryatense (5GBC1-RO1), which has been specifically designed for high-efficiency methane bioconversion and bio feed production. Leveraging CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing technology, this strain enhances methane oxidation, carbon fixation, and protein synthesis, achieving a methane-to-biomass conversion efficiency of up to 80%. This allows the system to produce up to 50,000 tons of nutrient-rich bio feed annually, providing a more efficient alternative to traditional animal feeds. The bio feed, with its superior protein and nutrient content, will benefit a wide range of livestock farms in Laos, helping to reduce the country’s reliance on animal feed imports from Thailand by half in the long term.

BETHALTO, ILLINOIS – The Cloud-9 Bethalto Sports League, a not-for-profit youth sports organization founded in March 2024, is calling on community leaders, philanthropists, and investors to help secure the future of youth sports in Bethalto. Over the past six months, the league has brought together more than 1,200 local youth and adults to participate in soccer, baseball, softball, T-ball, flag football, cheerleading, volleyball, and basketball. However, without additional support, the future of this valuable community program is in jeopardy.

The league currently operates out of a sports field in Bethalto, IL, which is owned by the Village of Bethalto. These fields, however, are up for sale at a price of $2 million. With limited resources, Cloud-9 Bethalto Sports League does not have the financial ability to purchase the property. This has raised serious concerns, as the loss of this facility could leave the community without a dedicated space for its youth and adult leagues.

That’s why my wife and I started this league—so every child, no matter their background, could have access to low-cost sports and a chance to play in their own community.”
