Return to Rwanda: A critical mission to Africa plunges a soldier back into the horror of his past

To be dated: With his rich and insightful experiences in the army, Hunter had a wide range of topics about which to write. He chose the setting of the refugee crisis in Rwanda and Eastern Zaire for his debut fiction novel ‘Return to Rwanda’.

In 1973, a six-year-old boy is orphaned when his family is slaughtered by a militia group in the highlands of northern Rwanda. The raid lasted just a few minutes. Twenty-three years later that boy has become Captain Jack Russell, commander of the British Army’s elite Pathfinder unit. He and his men are deployed to Rwanda as part of a UN operation to relieve the plight of Rwandan refugees across the border in eastern Zaire which is being gripped by a brutal civil war. In the midst of the emerging humanitarian disaster Jack is haunted by his past and embarks on a personal mission to avenge the murder of his family.

“I have always enjoyed writing and harbored an ambition to write a novel. I had a plot and my army experience provided the setting for my story. However, it wasn’t until I retired that I finally had time to fulfil my ambition,” commented Hunter, when asked about what inspired him to write the novel.

One of the features that makes this novel worth the reader’s time is the author’s experience of serving in the army, understanding the feelings of a soldier and knowing the issues faced by troops on missions deep in the heart of Africa. On the other hand, E. J. Hunter’s use of metaphors and eloquent language in narration takes the reader on a smooth ride through the plot. The reader can envision everything happening in a scene to the last detail which is an indication of great storytelling skill. As the mission moves on, the reader will have goosebumps, tears and laughs throughout until the shocking climax is reached.

Although the novel is categorized as a work of fiction, many of the lessons and insights from the narrative correspond to challenges and relationships in real life. There is much to be learned from the story and its characters, but at the same time the reader is entertained from the first page to the last.

E. J. Hunter served in the British Army for 25 years, much of it with Airborne Forces. After leaving the military, he worked in the City of London for a short period before launching his own consultancy business. He retired early so that he could pursue his passion for writing.

E. J. Hunter currently lives in Southwest England with his wife, Lin. Return to Rwanda is published by E. J. Hunter.
