Music Beats Cancer Campaign Aims To Fix The Broken Referral Process For Cancer Patients

“Dr. Mona Jhaveri founded Music Beats Cancer to support cancer research and address the severe funding gap that commonly forces scientists to abandon their work on cancer-fighting inventions.”
Music Beats Cancer partnered with digital health startup TeleMedicX to develop its HIPPA-compliant platform, VirtualCliniX.

Music Beats Cancer, a 501(c)3 charity, has joined Hawaii-based digital health startup TeleMedicX in a charitable crowdfunding campaign to solve the broken referral process for cancer patients. In the first week of the campaign launch, TeleMedicX raised $50,000 and was matched with $12,500 from the Music Beats Cancer Community Mega Fund, a fund that is supported by independent artists. The campaign concludes on May 11, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. EST.

“For cancer patients living far from state-of-the-art medical hubs, locating and transferring medical records to healthcare specialists is daunting, so half of all patients simply discontinue the care they need,” said Dr. Mona Jhaveri, founder of Music Beats Cancer.

According to a 2017 study by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement National Patient Safety Foundation (IHI-HPSF), only 50 percent of 100 million referral requests were completed successfully, resulting in the patient receiving the recommended specialty medical care.

“In Hawaii in particular, the lack of referral automation often hinders the speed at which patients receive specialty care, resulting in late-stage cancer diagnoses that could have been prevented if caught and treated sooner,” said Nour Lababidi, founder of TeleMedicX.

The funds raised for Music Beats Cancer’s campaign will contribute to developing VirtualCliniX, TeleMedicX’s innovative HIPAA-compliant platform, which provides secure teleconferencing and referral automation services. Of the projected $100,000, $15,000 will fix known software bugs; $50,000 will complete referral platform features; $20,000 will complete phase one of the pilot program, and $15,000 will finance a precision-medicine research and feasibility study.

Music Beats Cancer utilizes charitable crowdfunding to support cancer-fighting innovation and research, increasing the number of cancer-fighting technologies in the product development pipeline. The nonprofit supports the advancement of new solutions for cancer so more treatments reach those in need. This addresses the “Valley of Death,” the severe funding gap that commonly forces entrepreneurs advancing cancer-fighting inventions to abandon their work. Most of these projects will fail before they get a chance to prove themselves due to lack of funding.
