Inemmo Is Redefining the Concept of ‘Levelling Up’ by Reaching Out to and Mentoring Youths in Underserved and Marginalised Communities

To inspire, empower and motivate are the cardinal foundations of the award-winning leadership development company’s coaching and mentoring program

Inemmo has been recognised as a force to be reckoned with in their industry following their trail of awards. Recently, Joy Maitland and Atiya Sheikh of Inemmo were the award recipients at the prestigious Association for Business Psychology annual awards ceremony in the ‘Excellence in Using Business Psychology for Social Impact’ category. Inemmo was shortlisted as a finalist in three categories namely, Excellence in Development Interventions, Excellence in Embracing Diversity and Excellence in Using Business Psychology for Social Impact.

Following the Brexit referendum, the term ‘levelling up’ has been propagated and perceived to mean the process of addressing geographical inequalities throughout the UK, with promises of economic investment such as transport infrastructure projects, which will improve everyday life. The Financial Times have recently asserted that ‘levelling up’ is a running joke- a purposeless slogan.

However, for Inemmo’s young coachees living in socially immobile and underserved communities in London, levelling up is an entirely personal and psychological experience that challenges the UK discourse that presents schools as vehicles of social mobility regardless of an individual’s circumstances. Education is not a guarantee of success. Research by Owens and de St. Croix reveals the significant gaps of disadvantage for students with marginalised backgrounds. We live in a world where unconscious bias and prejudices not only exist but have taken firm root. It is one thing to have laws and policies that help reduce that bias, but it is an exceptionally long journey, and no one knows for certain how far along the road we are.

Inemmo runs a successful coaching program with the sole purpose of supporting young people in London who are plagued by inequalities, discrimination, poverty, and high levels of crime in their local neighborhood; the majority of whom are within black and brown communities. Concurrent with the short but personalized coaching experiences, is an ongoing mentoring program for individuals who want to benefit from significant long-term interventions, to support social mobility and the attainment of career and life goals.

The coaching begins with weekly sessions but gradually decreases with growth of the mentee’s confidence. An ongoing assessment of needs shapes the frequency of all coaching interventions. There is no financial cost to the young people who participate in inemmo’s ‘Levelling-Up’ program. The program has been integral to the development of their resilience, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, self-leadership, accountability, and career advancement. The program has greatly expanded since its inception some 3 years ago. Inemmo directors Joy Maitland and Atiya Sheikh remain committed to meeting each individual where they are, and to helping them get to where they want, or need to be.
