Nashville, TN – April 19, 2022 – Since its release on St Patrick’s Day less than a month ago, In Spirit and Truth, the newest single from the popular Nashville-based Christian rock band, NOT ASHAMED, has garnered more than 100,000 streams from fans around the world enraptured by the powerful lyrics and soaring music.
In Spirit and Truth comes from a deeply personal place for the band mates and was borne from a heartbreaking tragedy. The single, originally recorded more than eight years ago with one of the band’s original members, was left unpublished while the band took an extended hiatus. The unexpected death of the band’s lead guitarist, Tony Person, saw the band reunite for a concert to benefit Person’s family. After the show, NOT ASHAMED’s drummer, Don Wunder, and bass player, Rod Hutchinson, both agreed with Richard Varno that it was time to start making music again together.
“Tony was one of the most talented musicians and singers I’ve ever known. He was a true seeker of Christ and taught me so many things,” explains Richard Varno, NOT ASHAMED’s lead vocalist. “His passing made us want to revive as much of his work as we could so that we could honor his talent and his faith. We updated the song and added musical components to it to make a really phenomenal score that would reflect the majesty of the meaning behind the lyrics. It was my wife, Donna, who is Irish and played the violin on one of the tracks, who suggested the addition of bagpipes. Local Nashville-based musicians Daniel Pentecost and Katie Burke pitched in on bagpipes and vocals. That was the final piece that really tied everything together and made for this incredible song of praise.”
The song’s powerful lyrics are inspired by the story of the woman at the well and the band’s deep dedication to living the Gospel.
“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. Those are words that stay with me,” explains Varno. “The main verse of the song is ‘I will worship you in spirit and truth.’ The meaning of those words is powerful and comes down to the essential truth that we must surrender to God. There are three words in Hebrew that are translated into worship, but the root meaning of each of those words is service and surrender. As humanity and as Christians, we have to surrender to God’s will and his plans for us. It was painful for us to lose our friend and band mate, but we know he is with God and we surrender to His will.”
