The 2022 Ballon d’Or contenders have been ranked by The Football Lovers

Considered to be the most prestigious award in the history of football, the Ballon d’Or award is given to the best performing player over the course of a single season.

The Football Lovers has given awards to big names like Messi and Ronaldo. They’ve recently released their top 10 contenders for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award 2022. This award remains to be one of the most prestigious individual awards given to outstanding football players in international football. The voting rules for the Ballon d’Or were changed by France just this year. This means that there will be a lot more emphasis on performances for players across a single season instead of a whole year. As a result, performances during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which is due to begin in November of this year, won’t hold much weight for this year. Rather, performances for the world cup will have bearing on next year’s Ballon d’Or award.

Beginning the list, we have Phil Foden of Manchester City in the top 10. He is one of the few City attacking players to start both of their games this week. His goal against Real Madrid was a major deciding factor in him making the list.

He is followed by Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool and Vinicius Junior of Real Madrid holding the number 9 and 8 slot respectively. Alexander-Arnold scored 2 goals as a right-back with 21 assists, while Junior helped to seal Real Madrid’s Liga championship against Espanyol.

Holding the number 7 slot is Luka Modric of Real Madrid. He showed his brilliance as an athlete in the Bernabeu during the Champions League. Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich is close behind at number 6. He boasts 55 goals and 10 assists this season.

At number 5 is Sadio Mane of Liverpool. He solidified his traction to make it into this list following his goal in the Champions League semi-final against Villarreal. Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City is close behind taking the number 4 slot. The Belgian midfielder led from the front for Man City as he takes aim at taking the Champions League trophy.

Ranked third is Kylian Mbappe for Paris Saint-Germain. He scored twice in a 2-2 tie with Strasbourg. His streak continues despite being knocked out of the Champions League. At number 2 is Mo Salah, easily one of the most celebrated footballers in recent years. He has been guiding Liverpool towards the front of the pack, scoring 32 goals and 18 assists so far.

And at number one is Karim Benzema of Real Madrid. His second goal against Man City solidified his ranking as the number one player for 2022 and his efforts solidified Madrid’s standing in the Champions League semi-final.
