A quick interview with Orie King

  • Do you mind tell us your full name

Sure! My full name is Praise Chinyere Okoh known as Orie King.

  • What first got you into music?

My love for music. I used to listen to a lot of old songs growing up. My Dad gave me the best exposure to music. He would buy CDs of Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Bob Marley, Madonna, Dolly Parton and many others. I listened to those CDs so much! That they were so scratched up!

  • Working on any new project?

I am working on releasing my new single “Ons Dit Quoi Bébé.” This song was recorded in English and French. Be on the look out for a new experience. I also have a collaboration with DJ IREMS set to be released before the end of the year.

  • Who inspired you to make music?

God and my family.

  • How would you describe the music that you typically create?

I describe it as a healing sound, my music is Afrocentric music. Some of my songs are in English and French. I really enjoy getting to create unique music for all my listeners.

  • What is your creative process like?

It depends on what I’m feeling and where I’m at mentally at the particular time I’m creating a new song. Sometimes I get inspired and when that happens the process can quickly go from A to Z. I will write a song and go straight to the studio to work on it with a music producer. I can hear a beat and write to it and record the same day. It all depends on the vibe really.

  • Who would you most like to collaborate with?

I would love to collaborate with Angelique Kidjo just because she’s francophone too and even sometimes sings in Togolese local dialect which I happen to speak fluently myself. I would also love to collaborate with Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Chris Brown, Drake, Tayc, Tiwa Savage, Rema and many others.

  • If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

Drake and Wizkid

  • What is one message you would give to your fans?

Don’t stop believing in yourself. Everything you need to succeed has already been put inside you by God.

  • What is the most useless talent you have?

I don’t know if this is a talent or not but I am an over thinker and tend to remember things I don’t want to remember.

  • Do you sing in the shower?

Omg! Yes I do every time.

  • What songs?

Mostly new songs I’m working on.

  • What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

I would be a manger of a huge company in Information Technology.

  • Where have you performed?

USA, Nigeria, and Togo

  • Do you have any upcoming shows?

I do but the dates are not fixed yet. I should know more before the end of August.

  • Tell me about your most recent show.

I opened for Peter PSquare in Minnesota and it was so much fun. The crowd was very welcoming.

  • How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

It has impacted music in a positive way. The fact that people could download virtually, listen and purchase songs whenever they feel like is really cool.

  • What is your favourite song to perform?

All my songs are my favorite songs to perform.

  • Which famous musicians do you admire?

Brandy. I love how talented she is and the things she can do with her voice.

  • What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?

When I was in senior high school I used to sneak out to the late Omar B’s studio to work on songs.

  • What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Love yourself so much and always treat yourself right no matter what you go through in life.

  • If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

It would be giving upcoming artists the opportunities they deserve without people always trying to extort them.

  • What skills have you learned that will help you in your singing career?

Producing or engineering by myself in the studio. Thanks to Bossbeatz for teaching me that.

  • Who are the producers you have worked with?

I have worked with Ekellybeatz, Bossbeatz, Docdef, Omar B, Phat E, and The Reggie Rhodes.

  • What’s next for you?

I definitely will be making and releasing more music. Expect international collaborations and be on the look out for my performances in major concerts and shows.
