Chinese Ambassador to the UK Zheng Zeguang welcomes the return of the Sanya

At 2:30PM London time on 30 July, Visit Sanya China, which had completed the  Clipper 2019-20 Round the World Yacht Race, and the other 10 racing yachts performed a spectacular Parade of Sail along the River Thames, and then arrived at London’s Royal Albert Dock in turn. Their triumphant return was welcomed by a huge crowd of sailors’ family and friends, delegation of race partners and spectators creating an electric atmosphere for their arrival.

The Triumph Award Ceremony of the Clipper 2019-20 Round the World Yacht Race also kicked off – a moment of glory and victory for all teams.

Mr. Zheng Zeguang, Chinese Ambassador in the UK, specially went to the dock to welcome the Chinese sailors returning after completing Clipper 2019-20 Round the World Yacht Race. Ambassador Zheng not only presented awards to the Chinese fleet at the award ceremony, but also visited three Chinese racing yachts, including Visit Sanya China, at the dock. He asked the sailors in detail about their sailing and life on board, and expressed his great appreciation to the Chinese sailors for their promoting of Chinese cities and culture to the world through round-the-world voyage. Ambassador Zheng said that he was very pleased to see three yachts named after Chinese cities participate in the race and win the awards. Qingdao is one of the first open coastal cities in China, Sanya is an important city in Hainan Special Economic Zone and Free Trade Port, and Zhuhai is one of the first four special economic zones in China. They serve as important portals of and history witnesses of China’s expanded opening to the outside world. The participation of yachts named after Chinese cities in this sailing event will help improve the involved cities’ international reputation, promote their exchanges and cooperation with other countries in the world and show the world more about China as a prosperous, open and inclusive country. The Chinese athletes participating in this race have showed their good professional skills and spiritual outlook and thus been well received by many other countries. It is believed that they will inspire and drive more Chinese adolescents to love yachting and windsurfing.

Xu Lijia, a former Olympic champion living in the UK, also specially came to welcome the Visit Sanya China, and participated in the welcoming activities held on site. She said, “I’m very excited to see the sailors return in triumph in London today. The participating team members worked hard for a shared goal together with teammates from different countries with different political, cultural or religious backgrounds in the race perfectly reflects the spirit of sailing and the charm of sports. When I talk to foreigners about Sanya, they all know that Sanya with beautiful coastlines is the most suitable place for vacation in China. I believe that during the two consecutive Clipper Round the World Yacht Races, Visit Sanya China has attracted countless foreigners to visit this charming coastal city.”

After the voyage, the sailors of Visit Sanya China wrote down their Round the World feelings on the team pennant of Visit Sanya China, signed their names, and expressed their deep affection for Visit Sanya China. Their return from the voyage was also welcomed by their relatives and friends who specially came to London. Everyone boarded Visit Sanya China and visited the facilities on the yacht. Everyone showed their curiosity about Sanya, felt that it was a pity that fleet could not stop at the home port Sanya Port in this race, and looked forward to having the chance to reunite in Sanya in the future.

After three years, Visit Sanya China finally completed its round-the-world voyage with success, and won the sixth place of the year. However, the bond of friendship that is more precious than the race has just been formed, and the attention and friendship that Sanya and Visit Sanya China have gained from around the world will certainly continue.
