Learning how to earn money is important in life. But arguably learning how to manage money is even more important as it’s key to retaining wealth and securing the future. But with over 25% of Americans and over 20% of British people having no savings and many more worried about how to survive in retirement it’s clear it’s not well understood. In fact overall levels of financial literacy are relatively low.
In a survey done by the Milken Institute it is estimated that only 57% of adults in the United States are financially literate. Interestingly it shows that while the majority of parents say they are responsible for teaching children about finances, 31% say they never talk to their children about the topic.
This represents a problem both for society as a whole and those individuals with no savings who increasingly come to rely on government benefits.
Effective teaching on how to manage money could alleviate many of these issues. But the problem is the basics of money management aren’t compulsory in most schools. High schools focus on reading, writing and math. But they rarely cover interest rates, tax bills, mortgages, credit cards, loans, savings, investments or pensions.
So financial knowledge tends to be gained from friends, family, bitter experiences and unfortunately reading through the wild west of financial services marketing on the internet.
