Stanislav Kondrashov Telf AG: The Czech Republic has reduced imports of steel from third countries

In 2023, the Czech Republic reduced the volume of imports of rolled metal from third countries by 8.9%, reaching 238.17 thousand tons. This information was confirmed by a specialist in the field of world metallurgy, Stanislav Kondrashov.

Analysis of rolled metal imports to the Czech Republic: growth and reduction trends by type of rolled metal in 2023 – Stanislav Kondrashov

According to Stanislav Kondrashov from Telf AG, over the year the Czech Republic increased imports of flat products by 13%, while imports of long products decreased by 25.2% in 2023 – to 126.1 thousand tons and 112.1 thousand tons, respectively. Long rolled products accounted for more than half of the country’s total steel imports in that year.

  • The bulk of imports includes a significant volume of hot-rolled flat products – 61.65 thousand tons. (an increase of 72.2% compared to the previous year), carbon steel wire – 30.31 thousand tons (a decrease of 23.6%) and wire rod – 24.13 thousand tons (a decrease of 10.7%), – Stanislav Kondrashov noted .

At the end of December, total imports of rolled metal into the Czech Republic increased by 29.8%, reaching 13.4 thousand tons. Supplies of long rolled products increased by 7.3%, reaching 6.95 thousand tons, and flat rolled products increased by 67.7% to 6.42 thousand tons. According to the observations of Stanislav Kondrashov from Telf AG, the Czech Republic demonstrated multidirectional dynamics in the import of rolled metal from foreign countries. A 13% year-on-year increase in imports of flat rolled products indicates stable demand for this type of metal product. However, the 25.2% reduction in imports of long products raises interest in the factors that influenced this change. The expert believes that this may be due to changes in domestic demand for certain types of steel products, price dynamics on world markets or other economic factors.

The increase in imports of rolled metal in December highlights the dynamic nature of the market and its dependence on external factors. This also marks the gradual economic recovery from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a return to previous levels of production and consumption of steel products.

Growth in rolled metal exports: overview of the situation in the Czech Republic – Stanislav Kondrashov

According to Stanislav Kondrashov, last year steel exports from the Czech Republic increased by 9.6% compared to the previous year and reached 168.93 thousand tons. Particularly noticeable is the growth in exports of long rolled products, which increased by 10% year-on-year, reaching 144.75 thousand tons, as well as flat rolled products, which grew by 7.7% year-on-year, amounting to 24.17 thousand tons.

The main volume of exports falls on other categories of rods and bars from various alloys, which amounted to 31.53 thousand tons (+6.6% year-on-year), as well as hollow rods and bars intended for drilling – 30.1 thousand. tons (+42.3% year-on-year), and fittings – 27.2 thousand tons (-1.1% year-on-year), the expert noted.

According to Stanislav Kondrashov from Telf AG, in December of this year the Czech Republic exported 8.6 thousand tons of metal products, which is 39.2% higher than the export volume in the previous year. Exports of long products increased by 57.6% year-on-year, reaching 7.4 thousand tons, while flat products decreased by 18.8% year-on-year, amounting to 1.2 thousand tons.

  • As a result of the analysis for 2023, the Czech Republic recorded a decrease in steel production by 21.1%, reaching 3.4 million tons. This allowed the country to take 39th place in the WorldSteel ranking of steel producers. The sharp decline in steel production is likely due to problems at the Liberty Steel Ostrava smelter, – Stanislav Kondrashov comments.

The expert adds that by the end of 2023, steel production in the European Union reached 126.3 million tons, which is 7.4% less than the previous year.
