ScienceWizKids: Bridging the STEM Opportunity Gap for Underprivileged Students

ScienceWizKids, a transformative non-profit organization dedicated to providing free STEM tutoring to underprivileged middle and high school students in underserved communities, is proud to announce its impactful strides in addressing racial disparities in STEM education. Founded by brothers Luca and Kai Campbell, who understand firsthand the challenges faced by students seeking supplemental support in STEM subjects, ScienceWizKids has already provided free tutoring to over 300 students with remarkable results.

In the United States, the disparity in STEM education outcomes between black and white students is stark. Black high school students score, on average, 70% lower in STEM subjects compared to their white counterparts. Additionally, only 28% of black students perform at grade level in math and science, compared to 60% of white students and 80% of Asian students. These discrepancies persist into college, with only 32% of black students earning STEM degrees compared to 60% of white students.

“ScienceWizKids was born out of our belief that every student, regardless of their background, deserves access to quality STEM education and opportunities,” said Luca Campbell, Co-Founder of ScienceWizKids. “We’re on a mission to bring the love of science to all by providing easy access to mentors and role models, igniting a passion for STEM, and building self-confidence in students’ math and science abilities.”

The impact of ScienceWizKids is tangible and profound. Through its structured tutoring program, which matches students with right-fit mentors and tutors, the organization has witnessed a remarkable transformation in students’ confidence and academic performance. In a recent survey, 71% of ScienceWizKids students reported high confidence in their STEM capabilities, a significant increase from the 7% who initially expressed high confidence upon joining the program.

“We’ve seen incredible growth and achievement among our students,” noted Kai Campbell, Co-Founder of ScienceWizKids. “By providing compassionate coaching, setting short-term and long-term goals, and fostering a supportive learning environment, we’re empowering our students to excel in STEM subjects and pursue future opportunities in STEM fields.”

Since its inception, ScienceWizKids has prioritized creating opportunities for minority students to thrive in STEM. The organization has witnessed a remarkable shift in students’ attitudes toward STEM education by addressing the systemic barriers and providing tailored support. Today, 58% of ScienceWizKids students score over 700 on the math portion of the SAT, and 80% express interest in pursuing STEM majors in college.

“As we continue to expand our reach and impact, we remain steadfast in our commitment to leveling the playing field in STEM education,” added Luca Campbell. “Together, we can create a future where all students have equal opportunities to pursue their passions and succeed in STEM.”
