Anna loses her husband of barely eighteen months to a tragic incident on the eve of a big announcement. She is unable to cope with her loss and retreats within herself, rejecting all efforts made by her son Trent and the family attorney Harvey to help her move on from the tragedy. When her long-lost daughter reappears to console her, Anna gladly turns to her for support. Unknown to Anna, matters are not quite as they seem when the past she fled from comes back to haunt her with a vengeance in Colleen Coyne’s Bewept.

Bewept by Colleen Coyne features a recurrent theme of regret. Anna’s actions regarding her grief draw the reader into this psychological thriller right away and raise several thought-provoking questions. Chief among them is her decision to remain with James despite all the warning signs during their wedding reception. Readers may deduce from her referencing the stages of grief and potential Alzheimer’s symptoms that an incident at her home and her suspicions may be the result of an overactive imagination. Coyne presents her main characters in a way that seems as if everyone has a secret worth keeping, even if it means Anna becomes collateral damage. It is one of my favorite elements of her narrative style. She tells the story from the perspectives of all the main characters, a technique that will appeal to fans of suspense. With a masterful blend of compelling narrative, fantastic character development, and spine-tingling moments, Coyne crafts a terrifying novel that subverts the notion that “blood is thicker than water.” Bewept is a masterpiece in a class of its own.”
