A renowned radio broadcaster for 33 years, Kim worked in some of America’s finest cities including: Pueblo, Knoxville, San Antonio, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Miami. He was a DJ in different time slots and the Program Director of two of America’s legendary stations: KTSA-AM San Antonio and Power 96, Miami. As a DJ, creative freedom and owner trust led to huge ratings for Kim, where he consistently scored the highest market rating in his time slot. As Program Director, Kim led Power 96 to the highest ratings in the station’s history and achieved the most significant cumulative audience in the Southeast United States.
In 2005, Kim was forced into retirement after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Sixteen years later, modern science offered hope and a path to recovery. Tell us about Come Get Me Mother, I’m Through!
Come Get Me Mother, I’m Through! is a deeply personal memoir that follows my career path from hometown, part-time DJ to Program Director of Miami’s most listened-to radio station to the health diagnosis that changed my life forever.
At the height of popularity for radio stations and DJs in the 70s and 80s, I blazed a trail for myself as “Kid” Curry. My iconic, “Bed Check” segment, helped propel me to star status in Miami, and followed me during my 20+ year path to the dream job of Major Market Program Director. The perks of the job included hanging out with music legends, being invited to the White House, meeting Johnny U and a Watergate burglar, traveling around the world to find the next “Number One” song and, the best part, helping listeners in need.
Life was on track, but Multiple Sclerosis had other plans.
After dismissing early warning signs of the disease, the eventual diagnosis halted my lifelong career and extinguished my dreams. But, attitude is everything. With the love and support of my incredible Cuban wife and her assurance of, “We Got This Papi,” I learned to embrace this new challenge, discovering that life can be good, even in the face of adversity.
What inspired you to write Come Get Me Mother, I’m Through!?
During my successful radio career, everyone wanted to get next to “Kid Curry.” After my diagnosis, no one wanted to be next to the guy on crutches, or in a wheelchair.
This was a real mental challenge for me.
However, what temporarily dampened my spirit, eventually became a driving force for writing my memoir. As a medical change led to a halt in the progression of my disease, I was inspired to reinvent my identity and create a “new” me.
Come Get Me Mother, I’m Through became a two-year writing education that doubled as therapy. In the book, I chronicle my career, the diagnosis, and the harsh reality that it is expensive to be a disabled person in America. Writing has been a cathartic experience, helping bring awareness and education on how to live a full life with MS. After writing my memoir, I continued writing and have now published two other books.
How did your background and experience influence your writing?
The moment I stepped into a radio station in high school, I knew I was destined to work in the industry. I’m a radio guy. My dad was a radio guy; he got me my first part-time job.
To listeners of a certain era, a radio DJ was a big thing, and the details of a radio career can be attractive to radio listeners. I had a great career with lots of stories to tell.
My eventual diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis focuses on America’s failed (and, sometimes humorous) healthcare system. It’s a reminder that what happened to me can happen to anyone.
What is one message you would like readers to remember?
Life can be whole and exciting, then one day, everything can change.
