The book is divided into three parts.

The first part explores the most current research findings from neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, biology, psychology and education on learning and memory, and explains how to use these findings to optimize students’ learning.The second part guides teachers on how to integrate the teaching of lifelong learning skills into their courses, as these skills are necessary for students to learn if they are to thrive in the age of data.The third part addresses the four vital actions students must take to prepare their brains for optimal learning. These are: getting proper sleep, engaging in daily aerobic exercise, eating a healthy diet, and remaining hydrated throughout the day.

What inspired you to write The New Science of Teaching: Rethinking a Teacher’s Role in the Age of Data?

Recent advances in brain science show that most students’ learning strategies are highly inefficient, ineffective or just plain wrong. While all learning requires effort, better learning does not require more effort, but rather effectively aligns how the brain naturally learns with the demands of one’s studies.

Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning are advancing at a rapid pace and can displace a large number of workers. This is why, in order to compete in the global marketplace, we all must become lifelong learners, seeking to constantly update and upgrade our skill sets. Today, most college students will have as many as 10-14 different jobs by the age of 38!

Our motivation in writing this book was to share the most current research on learning and memory with teachers, and explain how to integrate this research into their teaching practices to help them meet the extraordinary challenges they face while teaching in the age of data. 

Learning how to learn in harmony with your brain is crucial to everyone’s long-term success.

How did your background and experience influence your writing?

We are lifelong educators who have spent a combined 60 years as teachers, researchers and educational consultants advocating for a teaching practice that is learner centered and based on the most current research on learning and memory.

I (Terry) have worked with teachers on more than 200 campuses around the world on how to implement a learner centered teaching practice. We have given hundreds of presentations and keynote addresses at regional, national, and international conferences on a learner centered approach to teaching and learning. Having remained very active in our exploration of research on teaching and learning, and having written other very successful books on this topic, we felt we had something important to contribute to the literature on teaching and learning. This book was a natural outgrowth of our desire to continue helping teachers meet the learning needs of their students.

What is one message you would like readers to remember?

Teachers have a professional obligation to follow where the research leads, even if that makes them uncomfortable and causes them to make changes in their teaching practices.
