Americans quit their jobs at a record rate during the second half of 2021. Alyssa Wilson, owner of My Fluffy Puffs, joined what many are calling “The Great Resignation” when she quit her high-paying union job in September 2021 to turn her profitable soap making side hustle into a full-time business.
Wilson was a Gas Meter Technician for National Grid in Boston. With COVID looming and the duties of her job sometimes requiring her to enter homes, she no longer felt safe.
Wilson has asthma and homeowners were not always willing to wear a mask. After being exposed three times while on the job, Wilson desperately wanted to work from home where she felt most safe.
In December 2021, a record 4.3 million workers left their jobs, according to the Labor Department’s latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover report. These employees aren’t all looking for a new company to work for — many, like Wilson, have opted to go into business for themselves. With an increasing customer base, Wilson did just that.
“We went from doing like maybe 1,800 orders back in 2019 to over 8,000 orders last year [in 2020]. And it was great,” she said.
The pandemic has accelatered an interest in entrepreneurship, especially among Black women like Wilson. Since leaving her $90,000 per year job, she is free to work on her business and give it her undivided attention. Members of the press who would like to cover this story may reach out to:
