Athelete’s Foot Types

There are three types of Tinea Pedis: vesicular, moccasin, and interdigital. The vesicular type generally affects the sole of the foot, and on the other hand, the moccasin type typically affects the lateral aspects and soles of the feet and is characterized by diffuse erythema and scaling. Apart from this, the interspace and underside of the toes are usually involved in the interdigital type; maceration between the toes, which can lead to painful fissures, is often present.

Athelete’s Foot Diagnosis

The diagnosis of Tinea Pedis is usually made clinically and based upon the examination of the affected area. Definitive diagnosis may be made by scraping the skin for a potassium hydroxide (KOH) preparation, a skin biopsy, or culture of the affected skin. The KOH preparation is less likely to be positive in severe cases with maceration of the skin. In mild cases the fungus can usually be recovered in a scraping. In severe cases it is recovered less than half the time.

Athelete’s Foot Treatment

Present treatment modalities come in several forms. Topical agents include creams, powders, and sprays. Creams and sprays are more effective than powders. Furthermore, patients with interdigital tinea pedis can be treated with a topical antifungal. Patients with moccasin, vesicular or ulcerative tinea pedis, or persistent tinea pedis may require oral antifungal treatment.
