Ellen Voie selected as Top Female Leader of the Year in the Trucking Industry by IAOTP

Ellen Voie, Founder of the Woman In Trucking Association and Women in Trucking Scholarship Foundation and SiriusXM radio host on Road Dog Trucking,  was recently selected as Top Female Leader of the Year in the Trucking Industry for 2024 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for her outstanding leadership, dedication, and commitment to the industry.

Inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself; only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, other affiliations, and contributions to their communities. All Honorees are invited to attend the IAOTP annual award gala at the end of this year for a night to honor their achievements.

With over four decades of experience in the industry, Ms. Voie recognized the need to support women working in transportation careers, so she founded the non-profit organization, Women In Trucking Association Inc. Her mission is to help women become aware of career opportunities and then to mentor and assist them as they become more successful in their roles. Women In Trucking is not limited to women only, as 15 percent of their members are men who believe in the association’s goals.

Voie’s prior role was the Manager of Retention and Recruiting Programs at Schneider, Inc. She was responsible for creating corporate-level programs to encourage non-traditional groups to consider careers in the trucking industry and designed initiatives to eliminate (or reduce) irritants that lead to driver dissatisfaction, which ultimately affects turnover. She also was responsible for communication to drivers (newsletter, audio magazine and driver website).

From March of 2000 through January 2006, Voie served as the Executive Director of Trucker Buddy International, Inc., a pen pal program between professional drivers and elementary students. She had served on the Board for three years prior and had become familiar with the program and its mission, and under her guidance the organization grew to become an internationally recognized mentoring initiative. In 2021 she was appointed to the Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee (MCSAC) by (then) Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.

Ms. Voie began her career in trucking upon earning her diploma in Traffic and Transportation Management in 1980 while she was employed as Traffic Manager for a steel fabricating plant. After starting her family, she used this education to become a freelance transportation consultant to carriers in Wisconsin. She kept the carriers legal through licensing and permitting their trucks for more than 16 years. During that time, she completed her master’s degree in which her thesis research focused on the complex identities of women married to professional drivers.  To better understand the driver training process, she earned her commercial driver’s license (CDL) in 2008 at Cuyoga Community College near Cleveland, OH.

Before embarking on her career path, Ms. Voie earned her master’s degree in communication from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point in 1999.  Following her degree, she earned numerous Certifications including an executive program in Finance for Strategic Decision Making and an executive program in Strategic Leadership from Penn State University in 2018 and 2015 respectively.  She earned a certificate in Customer Experience from the University of Wisconsin – Parkside in 2023, a Certificate in Strategy and Organization Performance, Business Administration, Management and Operations as well as a in Communication Strategy for Leaders, Communication from Penn State Smeal College of Business in 2022.  In 2008 Ellen earned her private pilot’s certificate and owns a Cessna Skyhawk single engine airplane.

Throughout her illustrious career, Ms. Voie has received many awards and accolades and has been recognized worldwide for her accomplishments. This year she will be considered for the Empowered Woman Award and to be featured in TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine. She will be honored at IAOTP’s annual awards gala at the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville next December for her selection as Top Female Leader of the Year in the Trucking Industry.

In addition to her successful career, Ms. Voie has volunteered at numerous organizations including as a Regional Vice Chair on the board of directors at American Mensa and the President of Mensa of Wisconsin Association.  She was a board member at TFC Global, which was an organization that helps the trucking community grow in their faith.  In addition, was also a board member at St. Christopher’s Fund, which is a relief fund and truck driver charity that helps drivers whose medical problems have led to financial hardship.  For 33 years, Ms. Voie was a board member at Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association.  Ellen was also a Director at the North American Transportation Employee Relations Association. In 2012 she was honored by President Obama as a “Transportation Innovator Champion of Change” at the White House.

The President of the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP), Stephanie Cirami, stated: “Choosing Ms. Voie for this honor was an easy decision for our panel to make.  She is inspirational, influential, and a true visionary and thought leader. We cannot wait to meet her and celebrate her accomplishments at this year’s gala.”

Looking back, Ms. Voie attributes her success to her perseverance, work ethic, and the mentors she has had along the way. When not working, she enjoys traveling, spending time with her family and flying her Cessna Skyhawk single engine airplane. In the future, she hopes to inspire and influence those getting into the field.
