What inspired you to write Crushing it in College?

The average tuition per year at a four-year college is more than $25,000. When you add room, board, books and other incidentals, in-state students or their parents can spend well over $100,000 to get that degree. Today, the average in-state student begins their life after college $37,000 in debt! With those kinds of numbers, students (and paying parents) must do all they can to make sure their college investment—in time, dollars and effort—pays off.

Despite the costs, I truly believe that a college education is invaluable, and, if it is done well, is the best investment you can make in yourself. College offers a unique environment in which to create invaluable life skills, build confidence, engage in critical thinking, enhance future employment prospects, and build the foundation for a meaningful life. Investment in higher education allows students to build an invaluable asset in themselves.

Throughout my career, I have helped hundreds of people, teams and organizations set goals and achieve amazing results. I realized that if people gained key skills earlier in their lives, they could be happier and more productive. By writing Crushing It in College, my mission is to help college students develop a life-long love of learning, uncover their personal potential, define their unique goals, and take control of their path as they step into their independence as adults.

How did you feel when you found out you received a Book Excellence Award?

I’m thrilled to have received this prestigious award, and to have the opportunity to reach more college students (and their parents), so they can unlock the full benefits of their own college adventure.

How did your background and experience influence your writing?

With several graduate and post-graduate degrees and certificates, I’m a frequent flier in the college system. I know the value of an intentional college experience and the dynamic skills it builds–far beyond the classroom, major or degree.

Throughout my own journey, I’ve observed first-hand why some students stumble and others soar. After interviewing high school seniors, college students, administrators and fellow graduates, I distilled my thoughts, research and corporate experience into easy-to-follow steps and strategies students can use to be successful.

With thought provoking exercises and practical challenges, this book will help you set yourself up for success, not only in college, but in life.

What is one message you would like readers to remember?

You own your life. Take control of it and make the most of it!

College can be your best investment, IF you design your experience to maximize its value and do the work.
